MALY SETS RECORD STRAIGHT

Posted on Oct 27, 2008

Councilwoman Janice Maly addressed the misinformation and outright falsehoods that her opponent, Carol Humphreys is conveying to voters as she goes door to door in her desperate attempt to win the election.

Maly addressed several of the many falsehoods below:

FALSEHOOD #1: Humphreys is telling voters that Maly is soft on crime because she recently voted to delay hiring 2 police officers.

REALITY: Councilwoman Janice Maly is very tough on crime. In fact, during her tenure, she has added over 16 new police officers. The only reason that she voted to DELAY hiring 2 officers is to give the incoming chief an opportunity to more efficiently organize the department.

FALSEHOOD #2: Voters are being told that Councilwoman Maly wants us to pay a $1.5 million grant match to put inappropriate things such as a swimming pool on the Town Green and that the law doesn’t allow other grants to be used to pay the matching portion of the grant.

REALITY: Councilwoman Maly has applied for a Green Acres grant to respectfully restore the Green, with input from many sources such as the Bloomfield Historical Society. This will be done in phases over 3-4 years, in time for our 2012 bicentennial. Regarding the matching payments, she is seeking other grants to fulfill that criteria, which the law clearly allows. Oh, and we won't even dignify the swimming pool falsehood.

FALSEHOOD #3: Humphreys is telling voters that if elected, she will impose a TAX FREEZE in town hall.

REALITY: The town is subject to various mandated costs such as Public Safety union contracts, sewerage processing fees, snow removal costs and rising fuel prices to name a few. These mandated costs would render a tax freeze impossible without a shut down of town services, including public safety. Further, if it was that easy to just have a tax freeze at the snap of your fingers, wouldn't every elected official simply impose a tax freeze?

Maly said, "Unfortunately, my opponent has run a mean spirited negative campaign from the very beginning. It's obvious that she will say whatever people want to hear in order to win. It's unfortunate that she has no plan and no vision - just falsehoods and unwarranted criticisms of my performance. However, I am confident that the residents will appreciate all of the hard work that I have put in on their behalf over the past 6 years and will see through this facade."
